The Interior Ministry of the unrecognized Houthi government issued a stern warning on Tuesday (September 23) against any public observances of the anniversary of the September 26 Revolution. In an official statement, the ministry claimed that hostile schemes seek to incite sedition and destabilize the domestic front.
The statement further alleged that the Israeli enemy is attempting this year to exploit the occasion through deceptive slogans, linking the warning to what it described as American and British failures to prevent Yemeni military operations in support of Gaza.
This warning coincided with a wave of arrests in Sana'a. Local sources reported that Houthi security forces arrested poet and writer Auras Al-Eryani in the Sa'wan district, eastern Sana'a, on Monday, followed by the detention of journalist Majed Zayed on Tuesday.
This pattern echoes documented practices by the Houthi group in previous years, where local and international human rights organizations have recorded dozens of activists and journalists being detained ahead of the revolution's anniversary. Among those still in detention since last year is journalist Mohammed Al-Miyahi.
The September 26, 1962 revolution marked a pivotal moment in Yemen's history, overthrowing the Zaydi Imamate and establishing the Yemen Arab Republic. Despite over six decades having passed, the revolution remains politically significant, representing values that contradict the Houthi narrative as many consider the group an ideological extension of the former Imamate rule.
In contrast, the Houthi group annually celebrates September 21, marking their takeover of Sana'a in 2014 an event opponents label as an armed coup, while the group promotes it as a popular revolution, positioning it as a symbolic alternative to the September 26 Revolution.
Despite the Houthi group's claims of acknowledging the September 26 Revolution, their stringent security measures each year reveal underlying tensions regarding the revolution's legacy, particularly its aims to eliminate social stratification and discrimination, a direct challenge to the group's ideological foundations.
