An Omani Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced today (May 6) that mediation efforts led by the Sultanate of Oman, which included discussions and communications with the United States and relevant authorities in Sanaa, have resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.

According to the statement, the agreement includes a mutual commitment not to target each other in the future, including American vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, in a step aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping.

The Omani statement came moments after US President Donald Trump declared that the United States was informed that the Houthis said they do not want more fighting. Trump added in remarks to the media: “They have have capitulated... We will stop bombing the Houthis.”

Oman expressed its gratitude to both parties for their “constructive approach that led to this welcome outcome,” expressing hope that the development will contribute to further progress on other regional files, thereby enhancing prospects for peace, justice, and prosperity in the region.

In the first Houthi response, senior official Mohammed Ali al-Houthi said on X that President Trump's announcement to halt airstrikes would be “evaluated on the ground first,” calling it “a victory.” Separately, senior Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti stated that the group’s operations in the Red Sea and against Israel “will continue until the aggression on Gaza stops.”

On Wednesday morning, senior Houthi leader Mahdi Al-Mashat said: “All we’ve indirectly communicated to the Americans is that any escalation will impact Trump’s upcoming visit to the region.”

Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Iraq have welcomed Oman’s efforts to broker an agreement between the United States and the Houthis.

These developments followed hours after heavy Israeli airstrikes targeted the Houthi-controlled Sanaa International Airport, putting it completely out of service. A cement factory and power stations were also struck in Houthi areas. The Israeli military said the attacks were in response to the Houthi targeting of Ben Gurion Airport with a ballistic missile.
