The Houthi militia announced on Thursday, October 16, that their Chief of Staff, Mohammed Abdulkarim al-Ghamari, was killed in what it described as an “Israeli airstrike.”
The group’s statement did not specify the exact date or location of the incident, though it is widely believed that al-Ghamari was fatally wounded in the August 28 Israeli air strike on a building in Sanaa where senior officials of the Houthi-led government were meeting, killing the Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi and several ministers.
Israeli military officials had previously stated on July 14 that they had targeted al-Ghamari in an airstrike. He was considered one of the most prominent military commanders within the Iran-backed Houthi movement.
Since then, conflicting reports circulated regarding his condition, until the Houthis’ announcement today confirmed his death officially.
Al-Ghamari was regarded as one of the key military strategists behind the Houthis’ maritime attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb—operations the group describes as “support missions for Gaza” as part of the Axis of Resistance.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Houthi military chief of staff Muhammad al-Ghamari was killed as a result of Israel’s strike on the Iran-backed group’s leaders in August.
Al-Ghamari was apparently fatally wounded in the attack. He was also wounded in an Israeli strike in June.
“He joins his friends, the eliminated members of the Axis of Evil, in the depths of hell,” the Times of Israel quoted Katz as saying.
The Houthis have announced the appointment of Major General Yusuf Hassan al-Madani as the new Chief of the General Staff.
In its statement, the Houthi militia claimed that its forces had carried out 758 offensive operations since the onset of hostilities with Israel, deploying 1,835 ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, as well as drones and naval craft.
The group also said it had conducted 346 maritime operations targeting more than 228 Israeli or Israel-linked vessels in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean.
It further claimed that its air defenses had downed 22 U.S. MQ-9 reconnaissance drones and launched 57 missiles in 40 interception operations against Israeli and American aircraft.
These figures could not be independently verified.
The Houthis emphasized that al-Ghamari’s death “will not affect their military capabilities,” vowing to “continue the battle” until what they described as the “liberation of Al-Quds.”
