UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has called for leveraging the Gaza ceasefire to enhance regional stability and reinvigorate momentum toward a comprehensive political process in Yemen.
This appeal was made in a statement issued by his office on Wednesday, October 15, during his visit to Riyadh.
Grundberg stated that the Gaza ceasefire "represents a timely opportunity to create conditions that support sustained de-escalation and drive progress toward an inclusive political process in Yemen."
He emphasized the necessity of seizing this opportunity through a coordinated approach among relevant parties to ensure tangible progress toward peace.
During his visit to Riyadh, the UN Envoy met with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, and the UAE Ambassador, Mohammed Al Zaabi, alongside the ambassadors of the five permanent UN Security Council members (P5) and other members of the international diplomatic community.
The discussions focused on UN efforts to renew the political process, as well as ways to support initiatives aimed at reducing tensions in Yemen and the wider region.
Grundberg also discussed the ongoing detention by the Houthis of UN staff, diplomats, and NGO workers.
According to the statement, the Envoy stressed that such actions "hinder humanitarian operations and undermine peace efforts."
He added that the safety and security of all humanitarian personnel are of the utmost priority to the United Nations and must be fully guaranteed, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained staff.
