Late Wednesday evening, two soldiers from the Southern Armed Forces were killed and others injured in a new AQAP attack on a military site in the Al-Musaina area of Upper Saieed district, Shabwa Governorate.

According to the official website of the Southern forces, “Deraa Aljanoob,” an operational source reported, “The terrorist elements targeted the site of the First Brigade of the Shabwa Defense Forces, at the Qalaa site, after infiltrating and bombing the site with mortar shells and RPGs.”

"An explosive device, which had been planted on one of the roads, exploded as a military vehicle belonging to the brigade's forces was arriving as reinforcement, killing two of our forces and wounding others," the operational source added.

The source explained that the attackers targeting the site fled after a number of them were killed and wounded by a strike. He added that Shabwa Defense Forces had been deployed to secure the surrounding areas and pursue and prosecute any remaining terrorist elements.

A local source told South24 Center at the time of the attack that three Southern soldiers were killed in this latest assault by AQAP against Southern forces.

The organization has not yet officially claimed responsibility, but it is expected to do so in the coming days through its media outlet, Al-Malahem.

Over the past two years, AQAP has launched dozens of retaliatory attacks against Southern forces in the Shabwa and Abyan governorates in response to operations targeting the organization’s presence in the two areas.

The STC-affiliated and UAE-supported Southern Armed Forces have inflicted heavy losses on AQAP in Abyan since August 2022, when Major General Aidrous Al-Zubaidi launched the “Arrows of the East” military operation.
