Airstrikes hit Houthi-controlled areas east of Taiz in North Yemen on Sunday (September 27), amid conflicting accounts of the targets and casualties.

A military source told South24 Center that Saudi aircraft were likely responsible for the strikes, although Riyadh has issued no official confirmation.

Video footage showed strikes in Al-Hawban and near the Mawiyah intersection. The media center of the pro-government Taiz Military Axis said warplanes had targeted a Houthi camp and vehicles near the intersection.

The Houthi-run Health Ministry, however, said the strikes had hit shops at a market near the Mawiyah intersection in Al-Taiziyah District, killing seven people and wounding 40 others, including children.

The Houthis blamed Saudi aircraft for the attack. South24 Center could not independently verify the casualty figures or determine the nature of the site hit.

In recent weeks, government military media have attributed similar strikes to “warplanes of the Armed Forces,” while the Houthis have blamed Saudi Arabia. The government accounts have not identified the types of aircraft involved, their bases or the command overseeing the operations.

Houthi media also reported five strikes on the Marran and Saqayn areas of Saada Governorate on Sunday, attributing them to Saudi aircraft.

Sunday’s strikes followed air attacks in Taiz on Saturday. The government-run Saba news agency quoted a military source as saying aircraft had targeted Houthi positions and ammunition and missile stores near the Mawiyah and Al-Dhakrah intersections east of Taiz, a reinforcement convoy on Sixty Street north of Taiz city, and a Houthi gathering in the Al-Suwaida area of Haifan District in the south of the governorate.

The source reported Houthi casualties but gave no figures.

Pro-government forces also reported renewed Houthi shelling of their positions on the Air Defense and Han fronts in Taiz Governorate.

In Lahj, a military source told South24 Center that the Houthis had fired a ballistic missile toward the vicinity of Al-Haima market in Al-Modaribah District on Sunday, as fighting continued on the Kahboub and Al-Modaribah fronts near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The Southern Giants Brigades released video footage that they said showed strikes on Houthi gatherings and military vehicles on the Kahboub front. The brigades said their operations were aimed at halting Houthi attempts to advance toward Al-Modaribah and Ras al-Ara.

In Shabwa, a military source told South24 Center that Shabwa Defense Forces had thwarted a Houthi infiltration attempt around midnight on Saturday, following clashes near the border between Markha Al-Ula District and Al-Bayda Governorate.

The escalation follows the Houthis’ advance along the western coast earlier in September and their seizure of the strategically important city of Mokha and the southern island of Mayyun. Fighting has since spread to Al-Waziyah and the Kahboub heights, along routes leading to Bab al-Mandab.
