Two soldiers from the Nation Shield Forces were wounded on Wednesday, July 29, in a Houthi drone attack targeting a military camp adjacent to Al-Zaytouna Mountain near Al-Anad Air Base in Lahj Governorate, South Yemen, a military source told South24 Center.

The source said the drone continued to circle above the camp following the attack, while air defenses attempted to shoot it down. Footage later obtained by South24 Center appeared to show debris from the drone that targeted the Nation Shield position.

No official statement has yet been issued by the Nation Shield Forces detailing the attack, the condition of the two wounded soldiers, or whether the drone was ultimately brought down. The Iran-backed Houthi militia has also not claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident came amid a marked increase in Houthi drone activity across several military fronts on Wednesday.

In Taiz Governorate, government-aligned forces said they shot down a Houthi drone over the Qalaat Al-Maqatirah area before it could reach a military training camp. According to the media center of the Tur Al-Baha Axis, the drone was detected at around 10 a.m. and intercepted without causing any casualties.

In Saada Governorate, the Second Brigade of the Emergency Forces said its units in the Razamat Axis shot down an explosive-laden Houthi drone as it attempted to target military positions in Al-Safra District.

In a separate attack, a Houthi drone targeted Emergency Forces positions in Saada’s Alab Axis, according to local military sources. The sources said Brigadier General Hisham Jamal, commander of the Second Brigade, survived the attack, while several soldiers were wounded.

In Al-Dhalea Governorate, a military source told South24 Center that the Southern Armed Forces and the Houthi militia exchanged heavy- and medium-weapons fire at dawn on Wednesday along the Muris fronts in the north of the governorate. No immediate information was available regarding casualties.

The simultaneous incidents in Lahj, Taiz, Al-Dhalea, and Saada point to a broader escalation in Houthi military activity across several fronts, particularly through the use of drones to target military camps, commanders, and defensive positions.

The Nation Shield Forces and the Emergency Forces are locally recruited military formations with a Salafi orientation whose establishment and financing have been supported by Saudi Arabia in recent years.
