Massive floods swept through several neighborhoods in South Yemen's, city of Aden in the early hours of Tuesday (August 19) following torrential rains from a cyclonic weather system, causing property damage and civilian injuries, according to local residents and officials.

Eyewitnesses reported flash floods inundating streets in the districts of Ma'alla, Tawahi, and Crater, submerging vehicles, disrupting traffic, and damaging private property.

Aden Governor Ahmed Hamed Lamlas toured the affected areas Tuesday morning, stressing the need for coordinated efforts to maintain essential services. He visited two injured patients at Gulf of Aden Hospital, and ordered their treatment at government expense.

Later, Hadramout's Early Warning Center announced that the initial weather trough that struck Aden had moved westward toward the Red Sea, while a second wave of rainfall is forecast to impact Hadramout and Mahra governorates through the weekend, with daily afternoon-to-evening precipitation expected.

The port city has endured similar disasters in recent years. In April 2020, floodwaters from extreme rainfall killed several people including children, injured dozens, collapsed homes, and severed power/communication networks while paralyzing road systems.

The Yemeni government had then approved a 1.45 billion Yemeni rial ($5.8 million) emergency relief plan with World Bank support to supply water pumps, repair drainage networks, and rehabilitate damaged infrastructure.
