On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the ‘South24 Center for News and Studies’, in partnership with the Climate Intelligence project (Climate AI), conducted a specialized virtual training session titled "Artificial Intelligence for Climate Understanding: Smart Tools for Journalists and Researchers”.
Held via Google Meet, the two-hour session brought together 25 journalists and researchers from Yemen and several Arab countries, aiming to enhance their capabilities in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to monitor and analyze environmental and climate-related issues.
AI expert Shehata El-Sayed led the session, which blended theoretical instruction with practical training. Participants engaged with real-world applications, including:
• Monitoring air quality through application programming interfaces (APIs)
• Analyzing satellite imagery to track deforestation
• Developing predictive models for climate change
• Designing "intelligent agents" to collect environmental data and generate real-time alerts
The training covered multiple key areas over its two-hour duration:
• Environmental monitoring and analysis techniques leveraging government and open-source data, observation stations, and satellite imagery, supplemented by data from international organizations such as NASA and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
• Climate modeling for short, medium and long-term forecasting of climate changes, with applications in early warning systems and risk management
• AI-supported environmental project management, spanning planning and audience targeting, data collection and cleaning, analysis and modeling, and finally visualization and dissemination
This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to equip Yemeni and Arab media professionals and researchers with cutting-edge technology for environmental reporting, elevating the quality of climate-related media content. The session was conducted primarily in Arabic, with technical terms presented in English.
