Yemen's Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday (April 26) the reopening of its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. An official ceremony was held in the embassy premises during which the Yemeni flag was raised over the embassy building.

Yemeni delegation head Ambassador Abdullah al-Duais, accompanied by Chargé d'Affaires Mohammed Ba'kar, oversaw the flag-raising ceremony, which included the playing of the national anthem. Official speeches were delivered emphasizing "the symbolic importance of this historic moment" and "the deep ties between the Yemeni and Syrian peoples”. The Yemeni Foreign Ministry noted that the embassy's reopening marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between Aden and Damascus across various fields.

For his part, Mohsen Mehbash, Director of the Arab World Department at Syria's Foreign Ministry, stated that his country would make every possible effort to enhance bilateral relations, in accordance with instructions from Syria's new leadership.

Background:

During Yemen's war years, the Assad regime in Syria had allowed the opening of a Houthi representative office in Damascus since 2016, which operated as a de facto embassy without official recognition.

However, the office ceased operations later as regional stances shifted, particularly after the Arab League Jeddah Summit in May 2023. Media sources at the time reported the expulsion of the Houthi delegation in October of that year.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) extended its congratulations to Syria's new administration led by Ahmed al-Shara.
