Three soldiers were killed and four others wounded from the Shabwa Defense Forces (Southern Forces) on Friday morning (August 7) in a Houthi drone attack targeting their positions in Harib district, southern Marib province, according to South24’s correspondent in Shabwa.

The attack came hours after another Houthi drone strike targeted a military camp in Marib province, which hosts large numbers of residents and internally displaced people.

The extent of the damage from the latest attack remains unclear, amid difficulties faced by media outlets in contacting local sources due to disruptions affecting telecommunications lines controlled by the Houthis in parts of the province.

Saudi media reported that Friday’s attack struck camps for displaced people, but South24 was unable to independently verify the reports.

Commenting on the attacks, senior Houthi figure Hizam Al-Assad said: “There will be no safety for Saudi forces or their mercenaries on our land.”

Friday’s attacks came a day after one of the deadliest waves of Houthi attacks against government forces since the 2022 truce. On Thursday, the Houthis targeted military camps and positions belonging to Yemeni government-aligned forces in Al-Abr and Al-Ruwaik areas of Hadramout, as well as positions in Marib.

Agence France-Presse reported on Friday, citing a Yemeni military source, that Houthi missile and drone attacks carried out on Thursday killed at least 58 government soldiers.

Including those killed in Friday morning’s attack in Harib, the reported death toll over roughly 24 hours has risen to more than 60 soldiers.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they had targeted positions where Saudi forces were deployed.

Sources had earlier told South24 that a senior Saudi officer was killed and four other Saudi servicemen were wounded in Thursday’s attacks. Saudi authorities have so far issued no official statement confirming or denying the reports.

Saudi Arabia’s Joint Forces Command on Thursday offered condolences to Yemeni forces over those killed in the Houthi attacks and reaffirmed its support for the Yemeni government. Saudi Arabia also announced that 11 civilians had been wounded in what it described as “terrorist” Houthi attacks targeting the southern Saudi region of Najran.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have escalated in recent weeks after Riyadh prevented an Iranian aircraft bound for Sanaa from landing at the Houthi-controlled capital’s airport on July 13, as the runway was hit in an airstrike. Reports said the aircraft was carrying Houthi leaders and Iranian experts.
