The media office of Hadramout Governor said on Saturday (May 16) that six people were killed and 21 others injured in a collision between a public transport bus and a trailer truck on the Al-Abr–Al-Wadeah road in the desert of Hadramout Governorate.

In a statement issued on Friday (May 15), the Transport Authority mourned the victims of the accident and said the bus, operated by Al-Baraka company, was traveling from Saudi Arabia when it collided with the trailer truck.

The Authority announced the formation of a technical committee to visit the crash site and investigate the circumstances of the accident. It also said it had begun coordinating with relevant authorities to provide support and medical care for the injured, while offering condolences to the families of the victims.

Separately, Al-Khanbashi, who is also a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), ordered an immediate investigation into the accident, follow-up on the condition of the injured, and the submission of a detailed report on the circumstances of the crash. He also called for measures to prevent similar accidents on the international highway.

The incident has renewed attention to a series of deadly crashes on Yemen’s international roads in recent months.

On February 24, 12 people, including a child and a woman, were killed when a passenger bus collided with a heavy cargo truck in Al-Mahfad district of Abyan Governorate. Both vehicles caught fire while the passengers were reportedly traveling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.

On November 5 last year, 15 travelers were killed in a crash on Al-Arqoub pass in Abyan, after a public transport bus operated by Saqr Al-Hijaz company collided with a passenger car, leaving most of the bodies charred.

Another accident on October 20 on the international highway between Hadramout and Marib killed 14 people after a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker, setting both vehicles ablaze.

The repeated incidents have intensified calls for improving and maintaining Yemen’s international roads, and for establishing emergency medical centers and civil defense services along long-distance travel routes to reduce the human toll of recurring road accidents.
