Tensions have sharply escalated in the Al-Wazi‘yah district of Taiz Governorate following a security operation carried out by the “National Resistance” forces, led by Presidential Leadership Council member Tariq Saleh, as part of efforts to pursue armed elements accused by authorities of attacking security personnel and engaging in criminal activities in the area.

The district, where individuals affiliated with the Islah Party (Yemen’s Muslim Brotherhood) are present, has become the scene of a rapidly escalating situation that combines overlapping security, tribal, and political dimensions.

The roots of the crisis trace back to late last week, when security authorities reported that armed men led by Ahmed Salem Haider al-Mashwali attacked a security checkpoint in Al-Wazi‘yah, followed by the targeting of an ambulance and a medical unit.

The attack resulted in the killing of one soldier and the injury of three others. Media outlets affiliated with the National Resistance said the assault was carried out using hand grenades and medium weapons.

In response, security forces launched a series of raids across Al-Wazi‘yah, targeting — according to their account — hideouts belonging to al-Mashwali’s group. The operation led to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of weapons, ammunition, explosive devices, mines, and materials believed to be used in manufacturing explosives.

Authorities described al-Mashwali as a wanted suspect facing charges including banditry, kidnapping, highway robbery, and attacks on security positions, confirming that prior arrest warrants had been issued against him.

However, the most significant turning point came in the early hours of April 6, when a young man, Burhan Ali Taha Jaber al-Mashwali, was killed. Local and independent reports said Burhan was struck while inside or near a small room adjacent to his family home in the village of Hina, in an incident that tribal sources and residents described as a drone strike carried out by forces affiliated with Tariq Saleh.

His killing sparked widespread anger and transformed the operation from a criminal manhunt into a politically and socially volatile crisis.

For their part, the National Resistance forces acknowledged Burhan’s death but denied that he had been deliberately targeted. A committee formed by Tariq Saleh said the incident resulted from an “unintentional error” while forces were responding to nearby sources of fire linked to al-Mashwali’s group, stressing that Burhan was not the intended target.

This explanation failed to contain local outrage. Tribal sheikhs and dignitaries in Al-Wazi‘yah issued a strongly worded statement giving Tariq Saleh’s command 72 hours to hand over those responsible for Burhan’s death to a third-party guarantor, a local tribal sheikh.

The statement also demanded the handover of soldiers accused of raiding villages and assaulting residents, the replacement of the district’s security director with a local appointee, the withdrawal of the Third “Maghawir” Brigade from the district, and the evacuation of military positions overlooking villages, warning that the situation could further escalate.

The developments also triggered broader political reactions. The Yemeni Socialist Party branch in Taiz called for the formation of a presidential investigation committee and urged an immediate halt to the escalation.

In an effort to contain the crisis, forces affiliated with Tariq Saleh formed a field investigation committee, which has begun holding meetings with local authorities, tribal leaders, and community figures in Al-Wazi‘yah.

Media outlets affiliated with the National Resistance reported that the committee offered tribal arbitration to the victim’s family, expressed regret over the incident, and announced the release of five detainees as a goodwill gesture, while investigations continue.

At the same time, the official narrative expanded its accusations, pointing to alleged links between Ahmed al-Mashwali and Houthi elements in the Al-Hawban area east of Taiz. These claims have been circulated by media close to the National Resistance, though they remain without broad independent verification.

Overall, developments in Al-Wazi‘yah indicate that the situation has moved beyond a security operation targeting wanted individuals, evolving instead into a complex test of control, influence, and local legitimacy, amid overlapping tribal grievances, sensitivities toward external military presence, and political rivalry between Tariq Saleh’s forces and circles aligned with the Islah Party.
