The internationally recognized Yemeni government launched the Sustainable Energy Conference in the capital Aden on Wednesday (November 26). This two-day event marks a significant milestone, regarded by officials as the commencement of a long-term strategy to revitalize the country’s electricity sector, which has suffered extensive damage due to years of conflict. The conference aims to lay the groundwork for comprehensive reforms and set the country on a path toward reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

The opening ceremony was attended by Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council member Abdullah Al-Alimi, Yemeni Prime Minister Salem bin Breik, Minister of Electricity and Energy Mane' bin Yameen, along with foreign ambassadors, diplomats, and representatives of international organizations.

A South24 Center correspondent reported that the Prime Minister conveyed a United Arab Emirates pledge to support the electricity and renewable energy sector with one billion dollars, affirming that 2026 will be the "year of electricity" in areas under the Yemeni government's control.

In a meeting with Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi, UAE Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Hamad Al-Zaabi said that President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had approved a one-billion-dollar allocation to support electricity and energy projects in Yemen, according to the state-run Saba News Agency.

According to the agenda of the conference, participants are addressing longstanding challenges facing the electrical system, including high costs of diesel-dependent power generation, deteriorating generation and transmission efficiency, and frequent outages.

The conference is also presenting "realistic options" for reducing breakdowns, enhancing private sector partnerships, and expanding solar and wind energy projects.

Held from November 26-27 under the slogan "Together Towards a Recovered Yemen with Sustainable Energy," the conference aims to propose structural reforms and mobilize funding for renewable energy projects.

Event organizers said that donor countries are taking part in the discussions to explore investment opportunities and support the government's plan to restructure the sector.

According to presentations, a long-term roadmap will be unveiled comprising four phases: a "critical" phase extending until 2028, followed by a near-term phase (2028-2030), a medium-term phase (2030-2032), and a long-term phase beyond 2032.The projects are expected to be implemented through both domestic and external funding.

In a related context, the Secretary-General of the Southern Transitional Council Abdulrahman Shaher, stated that the Council is "ready to provide all forms of support for renewable energy projects and foreign investments."

The energy conference comes one day after the Strategic Dialogue Conference to Support Yemen's Health Sector, held today in Aden, which brought together the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the United Kingdom, and 20 international entities.

In a statement, the British Embassy affirmed its commitment to supporting the provision of basic healthcare in Yemen.

South24 Center published an extensive report on September 18 examining the feasibility of such conferences amid ongoing economic fragility. The report emphasized that these events are not merely protocol gatherings but a real test of the Yemeni government's ability to attract international funding and translate pledges into tangible results.

The report indicated that the success of these initiatives remains contingent on the commitment of regional and international partners to provide direct funding, as well as on the ability of local authorities to ensure a stable and transparent environment.
