The capital Aden has been experiencing a complete power outage since Sunday evening (October 19), after all generating stations ceased operations due to fuel depletion. This new crisis threatens a total paralysis of public services, including water and sanitation systems, a source at the Public Electricity Corporation told South24 Center.
The source stated that the generating capacity in Aden "dropped to zero megawatts by Monday noon" after the Al-Mansoura, PetroMasila, and Al-Ra'ees power plants went offline successively. He explained that "the immediate cause of the crisis is the Safer Company in Marib halting crude oil supplies to Al-Ra'ees plant, coupled with the shutdown of the Al-Aqla field in Shabwa, completely cutting off supplies despite previous government directives for their continuation."
He added that the Corporation had temporarily relied on limited quantities arriving from Al-Dabba Port in Hadramout, "but these don't exceed four tankers daily out of the seven needed by Al-Ra'ees plant to maintain minimum generation," noting that these quantities "were insufficient to prevent a complete system blackout."
The Public Electricity Corporation had earlier appealed in a statement to the Presidential Leadership Council and the government presidency for urgent intervention to provide fuel and prevent the capital Aden from being plunged into total darkness.
It confirmed in its statement that partial generation at Al-Ra'ees plant cannot continue without regular supplies of crude oil and diesel.
In a Sunday statement, the Local Corporation for Water and Sanitation warned that the continued power outage threatens to completely halt pumping stations and sanitation systems, urging authorities to urgently secure fuel to prevent further deterioration of humanitarian and service conditions in the coastal city.
This crisis comes as Aden is experiencing sharply rising temperatures amid deterioration in basic services, exacerbating the suffering of residents who depend on electricity as their primary source for operating water pumps and cooling systems.
