British MP Clive Betts (Labour) has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM 1933) in the UK Parliament on September 16, 2025, expressing concern over the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
The motion urges the United Nations to intensify and accelerate efforts for an inclusive peace process in Yemen. Importantly, the motion highlights the “historical status of South Yemen and the enduring aspirations” of Southerners for self-determination. It stresses that any lasting peace must ensure the South’s representation at the negotiating table.
Betts has called on the UK Government, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to press for a faster peace process that is inclusive of South Yemen’s political aspirations. He has called on the UK government to encourage dialogue among the Yemeni parties, regional actors, and international partners “with the aim of securing a just, peaceful, and self-determined future for all”.
South Yemen was an independent state until unification with North Yemen in 1990. Since the 2015 war, southern political movements have renewed calls for restoring statehood, arguing that their aspirations must be fully recognized in any peace settlement.
