Israeli authorities announced on Sunday, September 7, that a drone launched by the Iran-backed Houthi group from Yemen struck the arrivals hall at Ramon Airport in the city of Eilat, southern Israel, injuring one person lightly and bringing air traffic to a complete halt.

The Israeli army said its air defenses detected several drones launched from Yemen toward the south, intercepting some while others managed to penetrate the Israeli airspace. One of the drones hit the passenger hall at the airport, causing material damage inside the terminal.

According to the Israel Airports Authority, departures and landings were suspended and the airport was fully shut down, while sirens were activated in several areas, including near the border with Egypt.

Israel Hayom reported that the number of people injured in the Houthi attack had risen to eight.

Channel 12 and Israel Hayom published footage from inside the airport showing the destruction, while reports said an Israeli helicopter intercepted one of the drones coming from Yemen in the southern airspace.

In an official comment, the mayor of Eilat told Yedioth Ahronoth that the attack had also disrupted the city’s seaport, adding: “The direct fall of a drone without any warning is deeply worrying and confirms that the Houthi threat remains serious and persistent.”

Hebrew media indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the route of the drone that struck Ramon Airport, whether it crossed from the south or the east, amid a wide state of alert in the army in anticipation of further attacks.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack through senior figure Hazem al-Asad, who tweeted in Hebrew that “the real revenge has not yet begun,” in a veiled threat of more escalation following the killing of the group’s prime minister, Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi, and several ministers in an Israeli airstrike on Sanaa on August 28.

The Houthis are expected to issue a detailed statement, as usual, through their military spokesman Yahya Sarea.

This marks the first attack to successfully strike a sensitive facility inside Israel since the August 28 Israeli airstrike killing senior Houthi leaders.
