Devastating flash floods swept across wide areas of South Yemen in Aden and Lahj governorates on Saturday (August 23), causing extensive damage to infrastructure and both private and public property. The flooding occurred amid warnings of continued heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

 

Residents reported that floodwaters originating from Lahj's valleys, particularly Al-Husseini Valley, rushed with unprecedented force toward Aden's suburbs, overwhelming the Bir Ahmed and Al-Haswa areas. Hundreds of homes were inundated with water and mud, forcing numerous families to evacuate as floodwaters surrounded their residences.

Local rescue teams, supported by Security Belt Forces, successfully evacuated dozens of families trapped in homes located within the historical flood path.

Local sources indicated that the Inmaa-Al-Sha'ab road was closed for several hours due to accumulated floodwaters before emergency teams managed to reopen it. Meanwhile, the flood bridge in Al-Haswa suffered partial collapses.

Aden's General Water Authority announced a partial disruption of water supplies from the Bir Ahmed field following damage to the main transmission line, affecting several residential areas in the capital.

In Aden's Dar Saad district, a local source reported severe damage to the Ammar bin Yasser camp, which houses approximately 500 displaced families, with relief materials destroyed and dozens of tents damaged. Local authorities declared the Al-Buraiqeh district, encompassing Bir Ahmed and Al-Haswa, a "disaster area" due to the scale of destruction.

Aden Governor Ahmed Hamed Lamlas inspected affected areas on Sunday, meeting with residents in Al-Haswa and confirming that local authorities would assess damages and compensate affected families. Lamlas directed the opening of schools to temporarily shelter displaced families and provide immediate food and bedding assistance. Security forces deployed at intersections and main roads to prevent vehicles from entering flood paths.

South24 Center has not obtained precise casualty figures from the Aden floods, though a health source reported at least two fatalities, several injuries, and hundreds displaced.

In Lahj governorate, heavy rains triggered flash floods across several districts, damaging farms and homes. Preliminary reports indicate casualties, though official numbers remain unconfirmed.

Images showed cracks in the famous Al-Ara'is bridge in the Al-Anad area, an internal structure that previously connected various localities.

Meteorological authorities warned of continued unstable conditions, forecasting additional heavy thunderstorms over the next two days across Southern coastal areas including Aden and Lahj. Officials urged residents to avoid valley channels and exercise caution amid concerns of renewed flooding and worsening humanitarian conditions.
