Aden, the capital city of South Yemen, has once again been hit by severe electricity outages in recent days, with power cuts lasting up to 20 hours daily in several districts, amid a crippling fuel crisis and the absence of sustainable solutions.

Residents told ‘South24 Center’ that the prolonged blackouts have worsened the suffering of diabetes and hypertension patients, the elderly, and children, who struggle to cope with the high indoor temperatures. Some have resorted to sleeping on rooftops or in the streets to escape the heat.

Complaints have surged on social media, with citizens calling for a “mass protest” tomorrow, Monday, July 7, in front of Maashiq Palace to demand urgent solutions to the electricity crisis.

Aden's electricity grid has suffered for years from severe deficits due to the shutdown of multiple power plants and fuel shortages.

A source at the Public Electricity Corporation told ‘South24’ that current generation in the city does not exceed 80 megawatts, while peak summer demand reaches around 600 megawatts.

The source, who spoke anonymously due to lack of authorization, confirmed that diesel and mazut fuel shortages have taken all power stations offline except for the Petromasila station, which operates on limited crude oil supplies.

Despite recent pledges by Prime Minister Salem bin Buraik to secure financial solutions to ensure fuel supplies, the Yemeni government has yet to deliver.

Last month, Bin Buraik vowed urgent measures to stabilize Aden’s electricity situation this summer, but no tangible improvements have materialized.

The electricity crisis is part of a wider collapse in public services and economic stability across South Yemeni governorates. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) has been facing mounting criticism, with increasing calls to dissolve its partnership within the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) and government.

The situation remains dire as Aden’s residents brace for another scorching summer without reliable electricity.
