Yesterday (January 31), the Southern Armed Forces announced that they had thwarted an attack by the terrorist Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) organization on one of their sites in Abyan Governorate, east of the capital Aden.

An operational source confirmed to the Southern forces' website that violent clashes erupted between the forces of the Second Backup and Support Brigade and the AQAP members in Wadi Oemran in Mudiyah district.

According to the source, the attack was thwarted and the AQAP members were forced to withdraw. The source spoke of "heavy losses" inflicted on the attackers from the organization.

The Southern forces carried out a large-scale operation to track down the AQAP elements fleeing the scene of the attack, the source added.

The clashes resulted in injury to a soldier of the Southern forces, who was transferred to a medical facility, the source explained.

During 2024, AQAP carried out 21 attacks in Abyan and Shabwa, resulting in the death of 48 soldiers from the forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC), and injury to dozens, according to the annual report of the South24 Center.
