Academics holding the ranks of professor and associate professor staged a protest outside the Finance Ministry in Aden on Tuesday (September 22), demanding payment of salary adjustments and other financial entitlements tied to their academic promotions.

The protesters, from universities in Aden, Abyan, Lahj, Shabwa and Al-Dhalea, said many faculty members had received their promotions under the applicable regulations but had waited years for the corresponding payments.

In a statement, they said the delay had caused financial and professional harm. They called on the authorities to complete the necessary procedures, calculate payments from the date each promotion took effect and resolve the cases of all eligible academics at public universities.

They also urged universities and the higher education and finance ministries to establish a clear mechanism to prevent further delays, saying they would continue to pursue their demands through legal and peaceful means.

Academics from several of the same universities held a protest outside the Finance Ministry in April. They said at the time that some promotion-related salary adjustments had been stalled since 2018 and called for back pay.

In May, the Finance Ministry said the financial benefits associated with faculty promotions were among the issues discussed by Prime Minister Shaya Al-Zindani and ministry officials. Its announcement gave no date for payment.
