Forces loyal to Yemen's internationally recognized government announced on Sunday (June 15) that they had thwarted an infiltration attempt by Houthi militia in Al-Jawf governorate, northern Yemen, marking the latest clash between the two sides in the years-long conflict.
The defense ministry-affiliated ‘26 September’ website quoted a military source as stating that Houthi elements, backed by drone strikes and artillery fire, attempted to advance toward government positions in the Hawishyan frontline.
The source added that government forces repelled the assault, inflicting human and material losses on the attackers, while confirming that one soldier was killed during the operation.
Government artillery targeted Houthi positions, resulting in their "neutralization" with casualties among the Houthi ranks.
No immediate comment was issued by the Houthi group regarding these developments.
Al-Jawf governorate in northern Yemen borders Saudi Arabia and holds strategic importance due to its geographic position linking Marib and Saada governorates – the Houthi stronghold.
The governorate has witnessed intermittent battles since the Houthis seized its capital Hazm in early 2020 through a large-scale offensive. Despite repeated attacks, frontline positions have remained largely static over the past two years.
This latest clash underscores the continued volatility along the northern frontlines, amidst stalled nationwide peace efforts.
