South Yemen: Three mummies found in Hadramout

In an exclusive statement to South24 Center today, the Director of the General Authority of Antiquities in the Hadramout Coast, Riyad Bakramum, confirmed that three mummies were found on Monday in the east of the governorate in a unique archeological discovery.

“Three mummies were found inside a cave from which oxygen was cut off in Al-Rayda and Qusayar districts on the eastern coast of Hadramout. The mummies will be transferred to the museum after restoration operations are carried out on the bodies," Bakramum said.

He added: "Studies are being conducted to confirm the age of the mummies. Preliminary results indicate that they were mummified, or they may not have been mummified as they were placed in a cave without ventilation to protect them from decomposition."

Over the past few decades, numerous mummies have been found in various regions of Yemen, such as Sanaa, Al-Mahwit, Dhamar, Al-Jawf, and Shibam. The most prominent of these findings was a mummy unearthed in 1986, dating back roughly 3,200 years ago to 1200 BC. It is currently housed in the Museum of the Department of Antiquities at Sanaa University, according to Reuters.
